GrandEssays Guide to Writing Assignments

Preparing

In the preparation stage of your assignment your lecture notes can provide you with the fundamental concepts and theories needed to complete the assignment. However these notes will not be enough to complete it, and thus it will be necessary to make use of the related readings, such as journals, recent articles, books, encyclopedias, and reliable internet publications.

When taking notes for your assignment, make sure you only take down the most relevant points. Analyze the materials you read and think of how you can use this information in your paper. Always try to translate someone else's work into your own words. It is a very bad habit to just copy large pieces from the work of others and only change some of the wording, since this is considered plagiarism.

Make sure you take down page numbers of the quotes you copy from your required readings and the citation details for every source you use in writing your article.

Writing

You need to understand and see what the outcome of the assignment will be. Never should you try to put down everything you know about a particular topic. It will be much more sufficient to consider some specific points only. Each argument must be sorted through and analyzed. Without it your assignment conclusion will not be valid.

It is best if your assignment has introduction, discussion, and conclusion. Make sure you define the terms you will use in the assignment. Write it as if your reader is not familiar with the area of study. End each paragraph when a particular issue has been discussed. Don't make your paragraphs too short; it makes the assignment look sketchy.

It is good when you use direct quotations; it serves as proof of your knowledge of material. However it is important not to overuse quotations, since this can also be considered plagiarism.
Someone else's words should always be put in quotes and referenced correctly.

Sexist language should also be avoided; unless you are quoting someone who uses this kind of language. It is always easier to refer to an individual as he/she, his/her, and exclude him, his, and he. Say ‘African Americans' instead of ‘colored people', ‘queer' instead of ‘homosexual'.

Bibliography

In the end of your assignment, when your conclusion is drawn, you'll need to provide the reader with a list of books, journals, non-scholarly publications used in writing of your assignment. The bibliography should be done according to the standard required by your academic institution or your professor. Whether you need your assignment done according to Harvard, MLA, APA, or Chicago citation style, the expert writers at GrandEssays.com can assist you with it in no time.
