![]() Undergraduate Dissertation WritingMost of the students show immense fright towards presenting their first undergraduate dissertation which is mandatory for graduation. As the saying goes, ‘As going gets tough, the tough get going’ only few of those who truly possess a good balance of writing skills and presentation tactics find it easy to frame a good dissertation report at their under graduation. As the dissertation report is an important element that decides the grade for graduation, students must take enough care to ensure that their undergraduate dissertation report is really a class apart.
Firstly, as final year students lack prior experience of writing dissertations, they must clearly understand the differences between writing a technical report, a journalistic article and an academic paper. It is to be borne in mind that all dissertation papers should compulsorily have an introduction, a body that discusses all the related information organized in a particular way, and finally have a conclusion.
The major sections of an undergraduate dissertation should contain the following aspects:
- Abstract
- Introduction
- Discussion
- Conclusion
- Acknowledgments
- Bibliography
An undergraduate dissertation work should begin with an identification of the author, the topic and the guiding lecturer. In some cases, inclusion of the university name is also considered. The abstract is simply a paragraph that condenses the entire dissertation and provides an overall view about the work. It must importantly include 3 major things- the problem that is addressed, a brief gist of the solution resolved, and the final conclusion that is obtained.
The introduction of the undergraduate dissertation work must put forth the question or problem that it solves. If the question that is answered in the dissertation is not known right in the beginning, it may be difficult to decide of what use the report is, and eventually the reader of the work will loose interest in the topic. A dissertation at the undergraduate level must be used to demonstrate one’s ability & hold of the subject by merely researching a topic and presenting the findings in an attractive way. For the support of the same, the introduction should not mess up the body and just explain how the discussion has been structured. The main body of the dissertation constitutes the discussion of the problem that is introduced in the abstract and it is this place where the actual exploration of the question that is raised occurs by relating it to a chain of logical reasoning, to justify the points that are noted in the due course of research work. Breaking up the discussion into different sections that accumulate related topics on one side makes the reading of the dissertation enjoyable. Adding sub titles to the relevantly grouped paragraphs add more X factor to the dissertation, however many students find it tedious to name all the sub-routines. The foot notes and footers really make the dissertation work to stand out of the crowd and make the compilation work bit more special.
The conclusion that constitutes the last part of an undergraduate dissertation must present the answers to the question that have been raised in the introduction part along with series of justification that indicate how the chain of reasoning flows. Any help that is sought from any person or source living or dead must be mentioned as a token of respect in the acknowledgment section. Basically most of the students will to include the names of their research guides and teaching staff in order to express their gratitude for helping them always in their journey towards graduation. All sources of information that were referred during the data collection phase must be included in the references section, with all proper fields like the name/s of the scripts and journals referred with the author’s name, the title of the referred script, & the date of publication.
No work is a master piece until and unless it is a product of the experts. It is obvious for any student to dream of achieving good grades with his dissertation work. If your undergraduate dissertation compilation proves to be an unmanageable arduous task, it is always safe to take the help of expert writers in framing the same.
